Do you think sin is a bliss and the grave is the start of your misery?
Eternal "life" is a gift and without it we are "dead", which means that without God there can be no more conciousness. The idea that we all are going to live forever and will just have to chose where to spend the "afterlife" is a delusion. There is no "afterlife", there is only temporary life in sin that leads to eternal death or there is eternal life free from sin. Why would God want to force people live miserably after living a miserable life? I find it ironic that people consider "hell" the beginning of their misery but don't see that our misery begins with sin and it all ends in "hell", which is merely the grave and the second death. You could say Earth is "hell", as in a great big cemetery of death which will be erased from existence by fire. The good news about hell is that its really the end of the misery of selfishness, sin, guilt, and death. In a sense we all go through "hell" when we let our selfish nature die when we surrender to God. Fortunately by the grace of God, we can crucify selfishness, (sending it to the grave and eternal death) and be resurrected and regenerated as a new being living for God (letting God live in you). This is called the "new birth" and it can only occur when you let selfishness die before it kills you.
