How to resolve sleep-pattern problems?

Now 1am, and sitting watching the TV with the nightly problem of how to get to sleep. Rarely able to fall asleep before 1am, and usually only occurs at 2am. I always wake up at about 6.30am or 7am. Obviously late afternoon I feel exhausted, but no matter what, I can't get to sleep until 1am again. Weekends I then sleep for 12/14 hours per night. I am male, early 40's, and pretty healthy. I don't drink coffee, and try to eat latest at 9pm. Any ideas for breaking this routine/problem?
