Celebrating first birthday without daddy & family?

my DH was out of the state for training when my son turned 1. We celebrated his birthday a couple of weeks early so that he could be there for it, but it was just the three of us. We don't really have any good friends in the area, and the nearest family is two hours away and couldn't come. So it was just the three of us. We helped him open presents, gave him a small cake that he loved, we sang to him, and took lots of pictures. He had fun. The first birthday is only as big a deal as you make it. If you want it to be a big shabang, then you're out of luck, but small and simple is nice too.
